When: Friday, March 25, 2011 - 9:00am - 5:30pm

Where: University of Southern Maine, Portland Campus, Luther Bonney Hall

Who: Members of the transgender community and their families, partners, and allies, as well as mental health, social service, and medical professionals

The purpose of the Transforming Health and Wellness conference is to raise awareness about health and wellness-related needs of the transgender community, and to address how the many areas of life that affect wellness may be influenced by gender non-conforming experiences. The Transforming Health and Wellness Conference will have workshops geared towards medical and mental health professionals as well as the transgender/genderqueer/gender-fluid community.

This year, we are expanding the number of workshops intended for community members, and adding workshops relevant to health providers already familiar with transgender topics. Like last year, we will also have several introductory workshops for health providers looking to gain a better understanding of a range of transgender-related topics.

Some of the topics covered throughout the day will include:

For health providers:

  • "Trans 101"

  • "Trans 201": Beyond the Basics

  • Concerns specific to trans children

  • Information about physical health and medical transitioning issues

  • Gender assumptions self-reflection and discussion

  • Q&A with a panel of transgender individuals

  • Providing counseling to transgender clients with co-occurring mental health and/or substance abuse concerns

  • Trans youth in schools

  • Case discussions Q&A

  • Ethical decision-making

For community members:
  • Living outside of the boxes of male/female
  • Open discussion for parents of trans individuals
  • Transitioning decisions
  • Butch/Femme identities
  • Body image issues
  • Relationship concerns
  • Coming out or talking about gender with family members
  • Spirituality discussion
  • Legal issues
  • Trans in the workplace
  • Assessing the needs of the trans community in Maine: What do we need and how do we make it happen?
