The Buddy Program

[More info about this program will be coming soon - check back by 7/2/08 for more details.]

The Buddy Program is a new initiative of MaineTransNet, which will depend on volunteers from the community in order to be successful. The objective of this program will be to provide a volunteer “buddy” to transgender, transsexual, or gender-variant individuals, family members, or partners, who could benefit from peer support from a person who may have had similar gender experiences. Buddies will act as short-term peer mentors for the purpose of providing a listening ear and a sense of shared experience. This could occur via email, phone, or in-person.

Figuring out one’s gender identity (or being the partner or family member of such an individual) can be a lonely and isolating process, especially when we feel as if we’re the only one in the world going through this experience. But the fact is that there are many of us who have successfully made it through the transitioning process and are living happy and productive lives. People at the beginning of this journey would benefit from realizing this and knowing that they are not alone.

The Buddy Program is NOT counseling, “advice-giving,” or a way to find a date. It IS a way to connect to peers who may have support to offer and wisdom to share.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer Buddy, or are otherwise interested in becoming involved with this program, please email Alex (alex@mainetransnet.org) for more info or to find out about upcoming Buddy trainings.

Also email if you'd like to be notified when a Buddy is available.
