High School Experiences

As a student in Maine I would like you to know how things are working in Maine about trans students.

I have grown up in central/northern Maine in which can be a great place. The only thing was is that everybody knows everybody. When I decided to come out as trans. It was a secret for a while then when I went to school as a guy instead of that girl. Once that happened everybody knew.

In that school we talked before the next school year started, this was the first time they had dealt with something like this. They were very accepting. They assured me that they would take care and do what ever they needed to, to keep me safe. This school was amazing because when in high school it is harder than college due to there is less people and we all know each other since we were just little. I have heard of other people, who are in other schools through out the state of Maine—they have had success too.

They do make the school so that we can use the bathroom without any disruption. I do think that it could be better by teaching teachers about transgender so that when this comes up they already know what to do, and how to protect us students. So that the student and family don’t have to start at the beginning on what transgender is and how everything works.

We also need help getting a way to allow trans students to play sports. As of right now I have not heard of anybody who has been able to play sports, and it is taken away from us because we are “transgender.”

I also wish there are more groups out there for support from the same age kids because I know for me I wish I had of known others that were transgender. I wish that because I wanted to come out for years but I didn’t think there was anybody else around who were feeling the same way I was feeling.
